Chesapeake Experience leads professional development workshops and courses throughout the year that provide educators with new knowledge, skills, activities, and resources to enhance Chesapeake Bay learning in the classroom. All courses incorporate the Virginia Standards of Learning criteria and requirements for appropriate grade levels.

Week Long Courses

Experience the Chesapeake Bay 2012: Educators Getting Up Close and Personal with the Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem

Course Description: This course is a hands-on introduction to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. Includes daily kayak trips on the York and James Rivers, a visit to Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s oyster farm, guest speakers, topic discussions, new classroom and field activities to take back to your students and much, much more. Based from Seaford Yacht Club in Yorktown.

 

2012 Dates: Week of June 18-22

Cost: FREE!! Funds from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund and the Virginia Environmental Endowment allow Chesapeake Experience to offer this course free of charge to participants

Recertification Credits: 45 hours

2-Day Programs

Coastal Bay Ecology

Course Description: This course explores the Coastal Bays of the Eastern Shore of Virginia with hands-on field experiences and activities. Includes a unique boat field trip to Hog Island where participants will witness and document the changes in the island from Bay to Ocean. A trip not to miss!

2012 Dates: May 18-22 (Friday evening through mid-afternoon Sunday)

Cost: $75/participant and includes all field trips, meals and lodging

Recertification Credits: 16 hours

 

Fall Migration and Conservation on the Eastern Shore

Course Description: Explore the Eastern Shore from a totally different perspective! Course includes discussions, kayaking and field experiences that relate migration, conservation, restoration and the settlement and growth of the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

This course is funded by and taught in partnership with the University of Virginia, ABCRC in Oyster, VA.

 

2012 Dates: Oct 12-14 (Friday evening through mid-afternoon Sunday)

Cost: $75/participant and includes experienced staff, all field trips, meals and lodging

Recertification Credits: 16 hours

1-Day Programs

Historical and Ecological Perspectives of Jamestown and the Chesapeake Bay

Course Description: Explore the connection of history and ecology as it relates to Jamestown and the lower Chesapeake Bay. This course will be taught in partnership with the National Park Service and includes a paddle on Powhatan Creek.

Schoolyard Habitat and Field Guide Workshop

Course Description: Learn through hands-on activities how to create a schoolyard habitat and field guide for your home school. This course is taught locally and led by Chesapeake Experience’s Teacher Program Coordinator, Lee Schuster.
